I was like a kid on Christmas Eve last night! I've been counting down the days for a month! Grand Master Gardener Seminar in Chico with guest speaker: *are you ready for this-you may want to sit down* Rosalind Creasy!
WHAT?! You don't know who she is? She is amazing. She is one of the pioneers of edible landscaping.
What exactly is that? I like to think of it this way: Do you eat fruits and vegetables (or do you want to)?
This is tomatoes, squash, collards, and basil all in her front yard |
Why do you have a lawn at your house? To sit in. To look at. Chance are most of us have the lawn realistically because it looks nice, and then maybe we have a nice box hedge around it to keep people from walking on it. Perhaps some pretty flowers, or colorful ferns. Maybe even an ornamental maple tree. It makes it all look very pretty.
Rosalind's view is why not have a beautiful yard that you can eat. Fruits, vegetables, and herbs are beautiful plants! Gardens don't have to be boring rows. Edibles grow in an amazing assortment of color. And guess what! You can still put your beautiful flowers and ferns in there too only now it looks 10 times more perfect that it did by itself. My personal favorite idea I got from her: lettuce planted with tulips!
Anyway, I think she's genius and to top it off she is an excellent public speaker. We actually got to listen to multiple speakers on several different topics: Backyard Vegetable Gardening, Small Space Backyard Orchard (LOVED this one!), and several others. The whole day was just filled with knowledgeable awesomeness - I can't remember ever enjoying taking notes so much (not that we were required to).
And, as if it wasn't a great enough day by itself, I got to experience it with my family who's as passionate about edible plants and I
Seriously?! I'm here all day long and I don't think to take any pictures until we're leaving?! Good thing I took so many pages of notes.
Out in the orchard Tom the Turkey was following us around for attention. I can honestly say I've never been followed by a turkey before. |
