Babies Don't Keep

Mother, oh Mother, come shake out your cloth,
Empty the dustpan, poison the moth,
Hang out the washing and butter the bread,
Sew on a button and make up a bed.
Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She’s up in the nursery, blissfully rocking.Oh, I’ve grown shiftless as Little Boy Blue
    Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
    Pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peekaboo

The shopping’s not done and there’s nothing for stew
And out in the yard there’s a hullabaloo
But I’m playing Kanga and this is my Roo.
Look! Aren’t her eyes the most wonderful hue?
    Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo

The cleaning and scrubbing will wait till tomorrow,
For children grow up, as I’ve learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down, cobwebs. Dust go to sleep.
I’m rocking my baby and babies don’t keep.

Our family is complete and I'm starting to find a little more rhythm in our habits. I've also found some things I want to change.

Last year I focused on wanting to be a better housekeeper. That's still a goal, but I don't stress over it as much. If you want to visit me and you don't like the dust or clutter, don't come back.

I want to have at least one 'Yes, mam' day each week. I don't tell my kids it's a yes day, but I say 'no' enough I need to be able to learn how say yes more. More playdough days, more painting, more 'treats'.....

Working on our health, we all drink a glass of  water before meals. It also helps with getting more water in the kids' little bodies.

On days I have a dessert, I want to remember to serve them with the meals and no limits on how much they have to eat first. Eat all your dinner, eat just a bite of dinner, doesn't matter.

No yelling and hopefully no cursing. This is one I know I'll have to work on a LOT. My kids know I'm always appreciate when they can help me be a better person by reminding me when I'm making bad choices.

My biggest change I  hope to make is doing resets. We do resets in our rooms when we're in bad moods (yes, even me) but I hope to learn to be able to start new everyday and not stay mad about what happened yesterday (or 2 hours ago).

~Bug

~Bug

Said in a way similar to big-ass bag.

Babies Bounce

It's been a month. A long month. A month I never thought I'd make it through.

I had friends who had babies with issues. Issues that kept them in NicU or required their new babies to stay in harness for months. Babies you want to snuggle and take home but can't. I often wondered how they were strong enough to handle 'sick' babies, then in my own quiet breath whispered thanks for my babies being born healthy and problem free.

My baby cries and his chest "crinkles". It's the most disturbing feeling, but he's happy. He laughs. He smiles. He's going to be okay. 6-8 weeks and he'll be 'normal' again.  It feels forever away, but we're almost there. He is such a brave baby. It hurts my heart that those who want to hold him, like his siblings and cousins, can't because his ribs move and those who can hold him don't want to because it's disturbing to hold 'broken' babies.  I know broken babies are unnerving, I was afraid of my close friends babies when they were sick. I didn't want to make them worse.

Now, that broken baby is my own. I will hold him. I will love him. I will protect him to the best of my ability. Some things are just out of our control. I'm so thankful Cliff was right: babies bounce.

*Disclaimer:
Don't actually try to bounce your babies or expect them to be okay no matter what.... this is a figure of speech. *

Things Kids Say: March 2013

"When (my little brother) gets big I'm gonna marry him!"
~Bug

"Why are you looking at my brother."
Because he's awake and staring at me.
"I'm not staring at you. I promise."
~Bug

When her little brother is crying
"My baby is crying. Go get him"
~Bug

Reading a 'recipe' she wrote for what she wants for dinner:
"It says we need flour and chicken with rice and noodles and peas"
~Bug

While people are visiting our newborn
He's so cute. Can I take him home
"No. He's MY baby"
~Bug

After telling her what we named him in the hospital
(Bug) meet (Moose), you're baby brother.
"No, his name is Baby Clifton"
~Bug

This went on for several days. She's sing songs to Baby Clifton and tell him how to spell her name. When we reminded her his name was (Moose) she'd tell us
"That's what YOU can call him, but I'm going to call him Baby Clifton".
She finally came around and decided she liked (Moose) but couldn't remember it for the first few days after that so she's ask us to remind her what his name was.

365 Day 366

We finally got our boys home today. We had a wonderful day letting them open their Christmas presents and playing with the goodies while I got to work on some crochet projects.  As a treat for the holiday we picked up some Mia Bella Gelato to enjoy after dinner and let the kids watch one of their movies from Santa (even though the boys are currently grounded). Such an enjoyable day to end such an enjoyable year on.

Happy New Year!

Things Kids Say: December 2012

In the olden times people didn't have pretty little lights on their trees, they had big, giant ones!
"You mean like the ones on the neighbors house?"
"Yes"
"You mean during my childhood...."
~Bear

"How did crunchy stuff get in my hair?"
"It's probably yogurt"
"Oh yea"
~Bug

"Pops is a cowboy!!"
~Bug

"It's my line"
(in response you telling her I'm not willing to cross the line with that choice)

(While I'm annoyed at Cliff and not using my best words)
"You were being bitchy this morning" -me
*very matter of factly without attitude* "You're being bitchy now Mama..."

"(I'm) not here right now. I went back to the twenty first century!"

365 Day 365

This morning we all woke up together and made mini french toast for breakfast.

Saturday, December 29, 2012

365 Day 364

Finally pulled out all the baby clothes we saved and sorted them by size and what can be worn by a boy. We ended with 7 outdoor trash bags of too small girl clothes, 2 boxes and a laundry basket of big girl clothes for Bug, and 1 laundry basket 0-3 months and 1 box of mixed sizes for the new little boy.
It was a long process, but I feel so fortunate that we have clothes for our coming baby and we can pass on some clothes to another little girl.

365 Day 363

It happened again. I got my second Jury Summons, both while pregnant.
I like that Sac County lets me submit my excuse online. Very convenient.

365 Day 362

Just a calm day at home. Bug decided today would be a great day to pull out Alphie and play games.

365 Day 361

Bug woke up and decided it was the perfect time to put her ornament on the tree. Even before we could put her picture in it or attach a hook. She knows where it goes and that's where she decided it needed to be now.

365 Day 360

Today was the last technical family Christmas party. There were many moments that I greatly enjoyed but sharing this morning with Bug was probably one of my favorites.

Between my natural Grinchiness and pregnancy hormones my morning didn't start off too bright. Lovely Bug didn't loose her charm and helped me out of my funk.
Then, while opening presents from Santa (whom she thought didn't come because she hadn't looked under the tree) she actually got excited to see a box in the wrapping paper. Getting past the paper, and then the box, she discovered that she got exactly what she asked for.

One that same note, at both family parties where she received gifts I never told her to hug anyone or say thank you, she just did it herself. I would ask her who the gift was from and once she knew who gave it to her she immediately walked over to them and said thank you and gave hugs.
Some days it's nice to feel like I'm doing okay as a parent.
